Free thyself from the ball and chain

I am reading Milton Friedman's Capitalism and Freedom. While I must admit that I spent most of chapter one  (The relation between economic freedom and political freedom) being rather skeptical. However, I have warmed up to him by the end of chapter two (The role of government in a free society).

As of this writing, the market capitalization of the big four corporations in US wireless business is about $354 billion. How much would it cost for the US government to buy back all their wireless licenses and turn the spectrum into unlicensed spectrum with little regulation? Is there a technical advantage to doing so? Most importantly, will it be worth it? (Because this is merely a thought experiment, we will leave out the minor detail that you are more likely to win the mega million jackpot than to see this happen in your life time.)
